Seniors for Seniors
Seniors for Seniors, a show dedicated to the needs of the elderly, is produced by FSU Panama City.
The 30-minute talk show is a relaxed, informal affair. "The whole purpose is to let seniors help themselves or find out where they can get help," said Frances Edelen.
Topics and guests are coordinated by FSU PC Nursing and Social Work professors, and have included professionals like heart specialists, oncologists, opthamologists, attorneys and more. "The School of Social Work is a natural fit for this program since social workers are strong advocates for the aging population as well as their families," explained Arlene Shaheen, social work professor. "We are skilled in many areas that affect our aging population such as safe discharge planning from hospitals and nursing homes, grief counseling, living wills and the right to self-determination. We have knowledge of community resources available to help the elderly remain safely in their own homes rather than alternative placement. And finally, we recognize the inherent worth and dignity of our seniors and seek to eliminate discrimination of the aging population in areas such as employment and media portrayal."
"The FSU PC partnership with the Seniors for Seniors program allows students to be involved in targeting educational issues appropriate for the seniors in Bay and surrounding counties. In addition, the seniors in the community are closely linked to both nurses and social workers, and will benefit from the ongoing education that is accessible wherever they live." , adds Mike Barbour, nursing professor.
The show airs on the GCCC Education Channel every Sunday at 8:00 am and Wednesday at 1:00 pm, as well as on WJHG Saturdays at 3:30 am.
